SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was founded in Paris, France in 1833 by Blessed Frederick Ozanam. It was established in America in November of 1845 at the Old Cathedral in St. Louis, Missouri . The Society is an international organization with volunteers in 142 countries and 5 continents.

Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul. It is this personalized involvement that makes the work of the Society unique. This aid may take the form of intervention, consultation, or often through direct dollar or in-kind service. An important part of the Society's work is to provide help while conscientiously maintaining the confidentiality and dignity of those who are served. The Society recognizes that it must assume, also, a role of advocacy for those who are defenseless or voiceless. There are no initiation fees or special qualifications. You determine the amount of time you wish to contribute. You also determine the activities in which to participate. Some of the normal membership projects include:

  • Food Pantry – We collect and distribute food to families in need.
  • Magi Tree – We organize the collection and distribution of Christmas gifts to needy families.
  • Client Advocacy – Our Members visit families at home to assess possible needs and provide payment assistance (rent, utilities, etc.).
  • Elder Care – We assist the local nursing home and also provide assistance to our parishioners.

Each member has the potential to bring something unique to the group to help us to serve those in need. What we need most are volunteers who can be active participants in helping us in our mission of service.

We hope this information will help you in making a decision to join our organization. Please take the time to consider this invitation. If you would like more information, you can contact Betty Kimbrough at 214-726-1915.

We strongly encourage all parishioners to join at least one parish organization. Working together we can accomplish great things at Saint Michael’s.

“Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40
