OUR CHURCH HISTORYFrom about 1872 to 1890 there was no official place of worship in this part of Collin County. “Circuit rider” priests came up from Galveston to minister to the people of North Texas on an irregular schedule. Around 1890, Father O’Hara celebrated the first Mass in McKinney on Palm Sunday at the McKinney Opera House, with eight Catholics present. In 1892, a small frame church was built on Oak Street through the generosity of local businesses, on property donated by an individual of a different faith. The provision was made that the property could be used so long as the building was used for church purposes. Membership of the small parish was approximately 25 members, and Mass was celebrated by Father O’Hara every other week on Sundays. Around 1910, the interurban between Dallas and Sherman was being constructed and several of the members of the construction crew were Catholic and moved to McKinney. The circuit priest could not always come on Sundays, so Bishop Dunne asked the Vincentian Fathers of Dallas, who taught at the old University of Dallas and provided hospital chaplains in Sherman, to take charge. In 1914, a church was built at College and Heard in downtown McKinney, but the parish maintained its mission status, since there was no resident pastor. There were approximately 50 members of the congregation at this time. The Vincentian Fathers ministered to the people of McKinney from 1910 to 1950. In 1950, Father Charles Mulholland was assigned as the first resident Pastor of St. Michael’s, although the parish continued to have the status of a mission. |
